Ensuring the pages of your website work harmoniously together is paramount to effective SEO. Keyword cannibalization can impede your site’s performance for a specific topic or subject.
Keyword Cannibalization: an SEO issue where multiple pages on a website compete for or target the same keyword(s), collectively harming the performance of both pages.
Trying to find cannibalization issues has always been a very manual process, so in response I developed a lightning-fast tool to swiftly identify issues where pages may be competing for the same keywords.

Requirements
To gather cannibalization insights, you will need one of the following:
- Google Search Console data (preferred): You’ll need multi-dimensional data containing both query and page data. This can only be accomplished via the GSC API.
- SEMrush Keyword data: If you cannot access data from the GSC API, a site’s keyword export will be the next best option.
| query | page | clicks | impressions |
| best hiking boots | http://www.example.com/page1 | 150 | 1000 |
| hiking boots reviews | http://www.example.com/page2 | 120 | 800 |
| waterproof hiking boots | http://www.example.com/page3 | 90 | 600 |
| cheap hiking boots | http://www.example.com/page1 | 60 | 500 |
Example of multi-dimensional data (query + page)
How to Use
- Open the cannibalization tool: Keyword Cannibalization Tool

2. Upload data. The data must be a .csv file, containing multi-dimensional query and page data
3. Set threshold (optional) based on top n% of keywords by traffic & impressions.
- Lower threshold = more important keywords by % of metrics.

Running a threshold of 80 provides a larger number of competing keywords (top 80% of queries).

Running a threshold of 60 provides a smaller number of competing keywords (top 60% of queries).
4. Export data. Once you’re happy with the threshold outputs, a formatted excel file is available for download.
5. Review data. Use the data to sort through keywords and pages competing by clicks, impressions, and both impressions + clicks.
The data is grouped by competing keywords (column A) and the associated page (column B). The rows highlighted green are the keyword + page combination that perform the best.
